Goju Ryu Karate For Families by Families

Welcome to your Family Karate school website

Family Goju Karate-Do was founded in 2015 by Sensei Daniel Samuelsson and his two children, Dai-Sempai Ben and Sempai Emily.

As a family Dan, Ben and Em have been teaching since 2009. Sensei Dan has been running Family Goju Karate full time since 2015.

We have three main programs split by school age into Preprimary age and Primary age classes.

Our Adult program is for Young Adults of high school age and for Parents of children who train with us.

We also understand that many families have one or more parents that travel for work or live regionally, we have developed online classes run over video conference so parents can keep up training with their kids while they are on site, or kids can keep up their training while travelling or in their lounge. Our entire training program is available online as a reference.

We run specially designed Parent / Child combined classes several times a week in addition to the usual age and experience split of classes.

We regularly provide “Grading Plans” for students showing them where they are on their journey and recommending goals for the next phase of their training.

Our training program is derived from the famous “Goju Ryu Karate-do Kyohan” or “Master Text” written by Sensei Gogen Yamaguchi. We are very grateful for the support of Kyoshi (Professor) Alex Alt who holds a 7th Dan and conducts our Black Belt gradings and key Kyu level gradings. Kyoshi Alex is a member of the Australian Martial Arts Hall of Face and the founder of the Australian Disability Martial Arts Association.

Online Classes

To support our students as best we can and allow students to train remotely our classes are also broadcast using the Zoom Video Conferencing system.

We have expanded the times we offer classes so we can also look after our Karate Kids who are being home schooled.

Sensei Dan has held senior roles in IT, his son Senpai Ben has training is in production (radio and TV) and Sensei Dan’s sister Susanna Samuelsson is the founder of arguably the first TeleMedicine company in Australia (iVet).

Between us we have been working on providing services over video links for a long time.

Your Karate Training Programs

Preprimary Age Karate Program

For focus, concentration, discipline and confidence.

Based on traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu taught by Gogen Yamaguchi and Chojun Miyagi your school’s Preprimary Karate program is specifically tailored to young children and teaches them focus, concentration and discipline to build confidence and resilience.

Teaching young children is a specialty of ours. We have put a lot of work into developing techniques to keep children engaged in class so they can get the most out of their time with us.

Here’s a short video of Sensei Dan giving an overview of how we keep your kids so engaged in class.

Primary School Age Karate Program

Focus, Concentration, Discipline and Confidence

Our program for 6 to 13 year olds helps them gain the confidence they need to face and overcome life’s challenges.

Based on traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu taught by Gogen Yamaguchi and Chojun Miyagi, our style of martial arts is specifically tailored to children and teaches them confidence, focus and discipline

Your Karate Program for kids has been developed to build Focus, Concentration and Discipline as well as build coordination, strength and self defence. The training program used has been developed from the Syllabus developed by Hanshi Gogen Yamaguchi with teaching methods created with the assistance of Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Occupational Therapists.

Here’s a short video Sensei Dan prepared for the Occupational Therapists at the Autism Association of Western Australia to show them the structure of our classes.

Testimonials

Sensei Dan is very friendly [and] my son is learning lots about karate.
I’m totally satisfied with what my son have achieved through this class.

Waruna Sanjeewa Epa, Parent

We love our instructors, [they] are amazing people who love their job and they knows how to keep children focused and how to make everything fun.

Tina Parada, Parent

Adult Karate Program

Your Adult Goju Ryu training program is strictly open to those aged 13-16 and Parents of the children who train with us. As a rule we do not accept Adult students who do not have a child enrolled with us.

We teach Okinawan Goju Ryu as taught by Sensei Gogen Yamaguchi. Our focus is on Kata, Bunkai and Self Defence with Kumite especially competition forms as a secondary element. Our Bunkai is pragmatic and practical with an emphasis on personal safety.

Within your school and it’s broader network we have the experience to create challenging yet achievable programs for everyone regardless of experience or ability.

Sometimes, parents will enrol their child in our school because they have always wanted to train Martial Arts or have trained in the past themselves. We encourage parents who do this to try classes themselves to see if our programs suite them and to understand the training their child in undertaking in greater detail.

Dan, Ben and Emily have trained together for many years in a number of clubs since Emily was four years old and Ben was seven. They particularly enjoy combined parent and child classes.

Ultimately, our goal is Kaizen or continual improvement.

Reference Materials

We have all of our grading requirements published on YouTube with additional requirements available for download from this site.

That way if you or your Karate Kid gets stuck with something you don’t need to wait until your next class to figure it out.

This helps our Karate Kids in particular become the self directed learners we want them to be.
